A selection of the 120 best contemporary European plays for the stage.
In 1904, Gorky wrote the following words, to be spoken by one of his characters: “A writer must use his special relationship with the public to denounce the appalling situations that exist in our country and to ask questions about their root causes”. We all know how much this exhortation influenced, angered and continued to exist throughout the entire century!
If we change a single word of this sentence – if “country” is changed to “continent” - we find ourselves transported into the year 2010 and the feverish atmosphere of the new dramatic works that are worthy successors to Gorky’s questioning! Today writers dare to “affirm their commitment” through dramatic works, which continue to speak directly to the public, more than any other form of contemporary literature and, although this may seem “out of place” to some, it is vital for all theatre practitioners. We constantly, anxiously wonder what future might exist for this ancient, always controversial form of human conflict representation, and new writers often provide the best answers to our questions.
Here then, is a “status report”, a kind of X-ray of our continent by young writers, who are well and truly alive and who care little for complacency!
