Turkish State Theatre was established in June 16, 1949. Since foundation its prime purposes as follow: to improve language and culture, advance general knowledge of Turkish society with national and international plays, develop and explore Turkish Theatre in the country, introduce Turkish Theatre abroad, use Turkish language in the best possible way, support Turkish culture to arrive at correct judgment based on generally accepted values and develop artistic and aesthetic sense.

State Theatre pioneered the formation of national theatre by putting Turkish playwrights’ plays in the repertory gradually, besides staging masterpieces of European Theatre. With opening new regional theatres, State Theatre still continues to be the most significant turning point for Turkish art and cultural life.

State Theatre is 65 years old. With 58 stages in 23 cities together with touring theatre companies, open its curtains every night. With carefully selected and rich repertory State Theatre performs plays all over Turkey. Every year inside and outside the country about 500 plays are staged. With national, international theatre festival organizations State Theatre affirms its respectability in the world.

Turkish State Theatre aims to bring theaters of different countries and cultures together with the Turkish people through 6 international festivals which take place between 8th of March and 27th of May every year. Besides our winter and summer seasons, we have a traditional “Festival Season” during which every year nearly 50 foreign groups are hosted and meet about 150.000 spectators.
