Lietuvos nacionalinis dramos teatras
Lithuanian National Drama Theatre now is the main drama theatre in Lithuania. That’s because it gained the right to be called “National” in 1998. The Theatre has a purpose to present different kind of plays, performances, events, to be opened to the professional creators of different styles and generations, in other words - to reflect the main theatrical culture aspects of Lithuania.
The repertoire of LNDT is formed considering the needs of audience, and also the purposes and aims, represented in LNDT regulations. The Art Board of this theatre is elected every second year and has a right to recommend and to discuss the plans of the theatre.
The Lithuanian National Drama Theatre has a long and complicated history. It is and has always been one the biggest theatrical centers in our country, but it had changed the names and buildings several times, because of the politicalm, social and historical situations. The Theatre was founded in 1940. The first play, staged in this Theatre (which was named Vilnius State Theatre in that time), was H.Heijermans’ “Hope”. The boat, a visual motive of the play about fishermen life, became the logo of the theatre, and it still remains the same.
LNDT now is situated in the center of Vilnius - in the street of Gediminas. In this place Theatre was opened in 1951. The capital reconstruction of the building was finished in 1981 (architects - Algimantas Nasvytis and Vytautas Nasvytis). Now theatre contains to halls - the Big hall (650 seats) and the Small hall (160 seats). There is an interesting foyer, where some performances, exhibitions or other events are being organized. The sculpture in the center of the foyer, called “The Lymph”, gave the idea and the name for the festival of national dramaturgy, which is being held right in current time, every year.
