The Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica

The Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica is situated at the crossroads of two cultures; it is literally a kilometre away from the border between Slovenia and Italy. Such a position has exerted a substantial influence on the role and orientation of the theatre. The theatre’s repertoire is composed of contemporary and classic plays, including both local, Mediterranean colour and a willingness to embrace new challenges and experiments. This research and contemporary approach are enabled by the openness of the cast and by the choice of directors who have worked at the theatre in recent years: we should mention at least Mile Korun, Dušan Jovanović, Vito Taufer, Eduard Miler, Jaša Jamnik, Mateja Koležnik and Diego de Brea. Directors from abroad, such as Paolo Magelli, Janusz Kica, Dejan Mijač and Slobodan Unkovski have also enriched our work. The theatre is the most »mobile« Slovenian theatre - almost half of its productions are performed on tour in Slovenia and abroad. In January 2004, the theatre was awarded the status of a national institution whose program and activities are almost fully financed by the state.
