Innovative Forms of Scenic Writing in Europe
Podium Discussion
Productions from young theatre professionals such as Jan Klata, Philippe Quesne or Tim Crouch have been invited to the Theatre-Biennale " people who perceive themselves as multifunctional actors, directors and/or performers. To them, “scenic writing” means shifting away from the traditional dramatic text with its dramatugically designed characters and story-line. In place of this, they use visual and cross-media aesthetics, a mix of various forms. Does this mean that authors have become superfluous and, therefore, the end of playwrighting as we know it?
Invited Authors: Jan Klata (Poland), Philippe Quesne (France), Hartmut Krug (freelance theatre critic Deutschlandfunk) as well as Hans-Thies Lehmann (Professor for Theatre Studies, Goethe University Frankfurt).
Moderation: Yvonne Büdenhölzer (Stückemarkt Berliner Theatertreffen

Nationalism on the Rise?
Europe in the Crossfire Between Globalization and Re-Nationalization
Podium Discussion
We currently live in an apparently irresolvable contradiction: On the one hand, national borders are being eradicated in favor of a culturally defined Europe, on the other hand, separatistic movements are booming. It appears that a sense of the national is an essential component in today's search for identity. Might this return to national cultural traditions pose an answer to globalization? The Belgian production “Sing and Be Merry” by Ruud Gielens, which arose as a reaction to the escalating nationalism between Walloon and Flemish communities in Belgium, reflects on these questions.
With the authors Petros Markaris (Greece), Giorgos Neophytou (Cyprus), Mara Zalite (Latvia), Biljana Srbljanović (Serbia), Goran Stefanovski (Macedonia), Ruud Gielens (Belgium) among others
Moderation: Jörg Bochow (Head Dramaturg and Associate Artistic Director, Schauspiel Stuttgart)

European Visions. The Europe of Differences
Lecture Series
Europe is the last politically effective utopia " such is the thesis of co-authors Ulrich Beck and Edgar Grande in their book “The Cosmopolitan Europe.” The universal claim to a Europe of Differences can open up new trade possibilities and pose a trendsetting contribution to the debate about establishing a European canon of values.
Lecture by Edgar Grande (Professor for Comparative Politics at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institut of the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich). Discussion to follow.

Dreaming of a Fence, or Hell is Other People
Ostracism and Discrimination in Suburban Ghettos, Lifestyle Communities and Ethnic Enclaves
Podium Discussion
The division of society into globalization winners and losers, in rich and poor, is reflected in the polarization of socially differentiated areas in cities. Does violence increasingly dictate human action, as demonstrated, for example, by the riots of young migrants in the French suburbs? Does the future of Europe lie in a war between secluded rich people and excluded poor people? Are other, different, foreign or poor people only perceived as a threat?

WIESBADEN: Invitation for THEATREBIENNALE - NEW PLAYS FROM EUROPE
Date : 29 May 2008 | author: ETC General Delegation , France
From the 12th to the 22nd of June, 2008, the ninth edition of NEW PLAYS FROM EUROPE will be presenting theatre productions from all over Europe.
For the third time, the Staatstheater Wiesbaden is hosting the most significant festival for contemporary drama worldwide, this time in cooperation with the Staatstheater Mainz. Since its founding in Bonn by Tankred Dorst and Manfred Beilharz in 1992, this festival has set the standards for European cultural exchange.
In following the recommendations of renowned authors, the members of the artistic direction team Manfred Beilharz, Tankred Dorst, Ursula Ehler and Markus Bothe " with the support of Matthias Fontheim and Marie Rötzer " have traveled throughout Europe to discover new plays for this year's festival. As a result, 29 plays from 24 countries will be presented in the cities of Wiesbaden and Mainz. The authors include up-and-coming debutants, surprising rediscoveries and internationally acclaimed stars of the theatre scene.
Each production will be performed in its original language, accompanied by a simultaneous translation into German.
An introduction will be held prior to each performance, and the audience is encouraged to stay for a post-show discussion with participating authors and performers following the first performance of each of the guest productions. Symposiums and workshops will be hosted by the theatre, film and media institute of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, the theatre institute of the University of Amsterdam, the International Association of Theatre Critics IATC and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung. In the festival tent behind the Staatstheater Wiesbaden in the Warmer Damm park, presentations, readings, discussions and nightly post-production parties with concerts and DJs will round out the program of events.

A snowstorm brings an airport to a standstill. The passengers are left to sit on their suitcases, briefcases and backpacks and wait. In a series of cleverly interwoven episodes, the travelers go back and forth and circle one another " they can't help but run into each other. Travel destinations and dreams collide and intermix. With this play, Tena Štivicic, a participant in the 2002 FORUM OF YOUNG EUROPEAN AUTHORS, has succeeded in creating a witty comedy about dreams and disillusions.

Since I spent a year in New Zealand in 1998-99, I was able to experience the effect on personal motivation by working in a foreign country. I would like to continue at this point and use my knowledge and abilities in the trade of joinery.
I am interested to learn about other cultures and different methods and techniques in building stage sets. I hope that both sides - me working for the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg and the theatre I will be visiting - can profit by this exchange.

Call for proposals to Turkish festivals
Date : 2 January 2008 | author: ETC General Delegation , France
The 23rd of April is a unique and a very special international celebration.
The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, dedicated this day to the children of the country to emphasise that they are the future of the new nation.
It was on April 23rd, 1920, during the War of Independence, that the Grand National Assembly met in Ankara and laid down the foundations of a new, independent, secular and modern republic from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. He dedicated the day to the children and entrusted in the hands of the youth the protection of this sovereignty and independence.
Since 1979, the children of Turkey have shared this national holiday with the children of the world. Hundreds of children from different countries and cultures, hosted by families, meet in festivities to discuss, interact, learn about each other, share the joy of togetherness and the hope for peace. The importance of this day is also recognized by UNICEF. Some countries also celebrate this day.
Since its foundation in 1949, Turkish State Theatre pays special attention to plays for children and includes them in its repertoire, since children are not only our future, but also our future actors, actresses, directors, designers and audience... So they are the future of theatre.
For this reason, Turkish State Theatre wishes to contribute the children’s day with a special festival, named “Little Ladies Little Gentlemen”, after a speech adressed to children by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk:
Little ladies, little gentlemen,
You are all the roses, the stars and the sparkling joys of our future,
the ones who will elevate the nation.
Always be aware of your value and significance!
And work hard...
We have great expectations from you.
Atatürk, the first president of Turkish Republic and Ülkü, his adopted daughter (1936)
In celebration of this unique event, we would be glad to see you and your company among us.
Sincerely yours,
Lemi Bilgin S. Devrim Yakut
